Do’s and Don’ts of Recovering from Oral Surgery
After each dental surgery, the doctor will give the most suitable list of recommendations for the patient. However, some recommendations are advised to be applied after each surgery:
- You should rest: Although daily life or work can be resumed on the same day, experts recommend that the day of the surgery be reserved for rest. In this way, any problems are prevented, the patient can easily realize what he/she needs by listening to his/her’s body.
- Cold is good: It is very normal to have swelling in the cheeks and chin after the surgery. If this is not accompanied by great pain, it should not be worried as it is temporary. Ice should be placed in a cloth and then applied as a compress to the area where swelling is felt. (It should not be kept for more than 10 seconds.)
- Eating and drinking during the recovery period: Foods that are too hard are harmful during the recovery period after surgery. It is both painful and can initiate bleeding when it comes into contact with the operated area. The same applies to very hot and cold food and beverages. The preferred dish should be lukewarm and soft.
- Medicines recommended by the doctor should be taken regularly: Medication use is a situation that is determined by the type of surgery. However, if your dentist recommends medicines such as antibiotics and painkillers, they should be taken on a timely basis and support the healing process. Over-the-counter pain relievers should never be used unless on the advice of a doctor.
- Rinsing the mouth: In most cases, the mouth should not be rinsed within 24 hours after surgery. Your doctor will let you know when to start cleaning your mouth, giving you a time frame. During this process, menthol mouthwashes, which can hurt and be harmful, should not be used and teeth should not be brushed. Stiff bristles may damage the operated area in the mouth and initiate bleeding.
- Smoking and Alcohol: Not only for the mouth, but smoking is also a very harmful habit to the body. If smoking is present, it should not be consumed with the recommendation of a doctor as it will damage the operated area and the healing process should be accelerated in this way. Alcohol use should only be preferred when the wound is closed, and should not be used in the first 72 hours as it may burn the operation area.
